Event Description

Marking 11 years of revolutionary hip-hop, Dead Prez make their first Ashkenaz appearance. This is the same Dead Prez that emerged at the dawn of the 21st century on Loud Records, bringing a revolutionary political consciousness to mainstream hip-hop with such songs as “I'm An African” and “Police State.” Their bold lyrics and style rapidly forged a stronghold that has kept them at the forefront and made them the “go to” political hip-hop group, with an impact that has brought about work with Jay-Z, Dave Chappelle, Kanye West, presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney, and many other artists, academics, and political figures. They have inspired everyone from Nas to T.I. to Drake with their outspoken political audacity and knack for shedding light on life struggles.

Dead Prez is the convergence of hip-hop with urban struggle, street perspective, and community empowerment brought forth by rappers and political activists M-1 and Stic.man. The duo came together in the late 1990s and have successfully sustained the expansion of the Dead Prez brand to include their own multimedia company Boss Up, Inc.; solo projects; and a myriad of impressive collaborations. Strong proponents of social justice, healthy lifestyles, and self-determination, Dead Prez continue to impact both music and politics.
